late 1930's: uncle Boed at artschool
See 'late 1930's: uncle Boed at artschool' On Black!
My favorite uncle ( my mother's only brother ) Boed (or Frits Jr., as he was officially called) went to artschool in Amsterdam in the late 1930's, later to become a non-conformist and not too succesful fine artist . A portrait of him, later in life, can be seen here.
In this classroom picture he is sitting in the front row on the right, looking like a 19th century dandy, showing off his prehistoric pipe. I have no idea who the other students are (only three boys amongst them!), or the name of their teacher on the left However, the shot does provide us with an interesting glimpse into the artschool classroom of that time. The blackboard holds an interesting sentencence: "spare us from having to BEG (underlined) for your school fees!"
I got this picture (badly damaged unfortunately) after uncle Boed died. He left me an envelope with all the pictures of himself he had collected over the years. This was certainly one of the more interesting ones.
The school Boed went to was the old 'Rijksacademie voor Beeldende Kunsten/State Academy for Fine Arts' in Amsterdam where his father, Frits Lensvelt Sr., taught stage and costume design. I have no idea who else is in the picture and inquiries I made at the school's archive didn't yield any results either. I'd certainly be interested if anyone recognizes anybody in this picture! Please, let me know!
