While passing this rose on the sidewalk I realized that it would be unacceptable to fail to appreciate its existence and memorialize it eternally right here on the Internet. The rose, as it turns out, had a similar idea:
The rose said to me, "Throughout the history of the existence of roses on the Earth -- a very long history, not that roses should boast about such things -- there has never been an animal as impressive as humankind. For that reason the roses have decided to memorialize the existence of humankind so that future generations might remember that such an impressive animal existed."
I said to the rose, "Are you suggesting that humankind won't exist in the future?"
The rose answered, "Of course."
Then I wondered, "And you really are going to preserve a memory of humankind's existence?"
The rose answered, "No. Seriously, I was only joking. The Universe has decided that humankind was a mistake best forgotten and never repeated."
