LEAKING WASTE SHIPMENT CONTAINER - WHITE METAL BOX – On December 15, 7 boxes containing filtration media from Fernald’s Advanced Waste Water Treatment Plant on its way for burial at the Nevada Test Site developed cracks and water began leaking into the trucks. In one case a truck was parked in Kingman, Arizona when the leak was discovered and a radiation response team dispatched to the area. While the filtration media was use to remove uranium from the aquifer the water released from the media was not contaminated. The event shut down Fernald’s waste shipping program for over a year and an investigation and corrective action plan were quickly pursued. Here workers empty one of the suspect boxes in order to trace the cause of the standing water and leakage.
