The Hidden Side of the Michigan State Capitol

The Michigan State Capitol boasts several acres of beautiful decorative painting on its walls and ceilings for the public to see. This artwork, executed, restored, and touched up by numerous artists over multiple decades, does not have artist signatures visible like most pieces of art. However, that does not mean that the artists did not sign their work - they just signed it in hard to find places. Most of the signatures of the artists that worked on the decorative painting appear on the wide boards that top the many door casings throughout the Capitol, most of which are over 15 foot in the air. Only viewable from a very tall ladder, these signatures pay tribute to the men and women that brought the walls of the Michigan State Capitol to life. I photographed these signatures a few summers ago to assist my wife with a project. We had to arrive early in the morning in order to have access to the doors without blocking them and also to avoid the inevitable questions about what we were doing that would have slowed our progress.
