Shanghai can suffer from poor visibility from the "fog" there. It hasn't changed much in the 20 years since we were last there... living and working for ~2 years. One thing that has changed is the vast network of raised ring roads on top of other "local" roads. They are experts for this infrastructure improvement. At night there isn't a lot of colour in the buildings/lighting outside of the Bund/Lujiazui area so the road lighting is dramatic.

There are many of these junctions but not so many from public access areas... maybe next time!
