String Symposium
As a cellist, one of the most important components of my equipment is my strings. For years, I have used Spirocore strings which are made by the Viennese company of Thomastik-Infeld (www.thomastik-infeld.com). Last year the Emerson Quartet was given a tour of the factory by Wolfgang Weiss, a violinist who is head of marketing for the company, and we tried many different strings, including new types in development, and gave the technicians direct feedback.
Wolfgang Weiss visited New York last week and gave a riveting talk on the physics of strings at the shop of violin dealer Gregory Singer on 80th street (www.singerviolins.com). Greg has wonderful space, in the building just behind the famous H&H Bagels shop, where he presents concerts and all kinds of interesting events.
Included in Wolfgang’s talk were videos taken of moving strings with a high speed camera, allowing for extreme slow motion viewing. One of them, shown in the photo below, was the exact same action as is shown in my Cello Talk video No. 12, Bow and String, which demonstrates what is happening when bow pulls string. Fascinating, even for non-players
