La fondazione di questa chiesa è legata a una leggenda popolare. La storia racconta che durante una tempesta di neve un viandante viaggiava su un carretto lungo il fiume Sagittario, in direzione di Scanno. Infittendosi sempre di più la neve e la nebbia, il mercante scese, portando a mano l'asino, e raggiunse il paese di Villalago, dove doveva scambiare un orcio d'olio, e venne accolto da una famiglia. L'uomo però non volle fermarsi a dormire, e continuò il viaggio in mezzo alla bufera, che era peggiorata. In lontananza nella nebbia, l'uomo video una piccola luce, e si mise a seguirla, trovandosi all'improvviso in una piana assolata, come se fosse una normale giornata di primavera, anche se funestata da nuvole e pioggia; l'uomo tuttavia, mosso da curiosità e da una forza sovrannaturale, seguì il lumicino in lontananza, raggiungendo Scanno; non appena il paese apparve all'orizzonte, il lumicino cessò, e la dimensione della primavera scomparve, ritornando quella della tempesta di neve. L'uomo si accorse con stupore di aver attraversato il lago ghiacciato a piedi, e nel luogo dove appariva il lumicino che lo indirizzava verso la strada del paese, pochi anni dopo decide di erigervi l'attuale chiesa della Madonna del Lago, dove per la precisione già prima vi si trovava una cona votiva con statua della Madonna.
The foundation of this church is linked to a popular legend. The story tells that during a snowstorm a traveler was traveling on a cart along the Sagittarius river, in the direction of Scanno. As the snow and fog thickened more and more, the merchant got off, carrying the donkey by hand, and reached the town of Villalago, where he had to exchange a jar of oil, and was welcomed by a family. However, the man did not want to stop and sleep, and continued his journey in the midst of the storm, which had worsened. In the distance in the fog, the man saw a small light, and he started following it, suddenly finding himself in a sunny plain, as if it were a normal spring day, even if marred by clouds and rain; however, the man, moved by curiosity and by a supernatural force, followed the little light in the distance, reaching Scanno; as soon as the town appeared on the horizon, the little light ceased, and the dimension of spring disappeared, returning to that of the snowstorm. The man realized with astonishment that he had crossed the frozen lake on foot, and in the place where the little light appeared which directed him towards the village road, a few years later he decided to erect the current church of the Madonna del Lago, where for the precision already before there was a votive cona with a statue of the Madonna.
