RAF Spadeadam receive the Freedom of the City of Carlisle

The Carlisle public turned out in force to watch Royal Air Force Spadeadam receive the Freedom of the City of Carlisle.

Two flights of personnel, led by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and accompanied by the Queens Colour, marched past cheering crowds and a sea of union jacks into the city centre where the Mayor, Councillor Jessica Riddle, the Joint Force Component Commander, Air Commodore Jez Attridge, and the Royal Air Force Spadeadam Station Commander, Wing Commander Tim McAuley, took the Salute.

Air Commodore Jez Attridge said: “It is a huge honour and what we saw today with so many people coming out to support us, shows the really close relationship between not just Carlisle, but also the wider Cumbrian community and the Royal Air Force.

In the Centenary year of the Royal Air Force, it is a great honour to be granted the privilege of Freedom of the City, and it cements the close links between the base and Carlisle”.

Councillor Colin Glover, Leader of the City Council said:

“It is important to recognise the service given by the Royal Air Force to the city, with strong links throughout the years. It was important to recognise that service and especially so in this year, the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force".
