Angel of the North, Gateshead
Anthony Gormley, being interviewed by Andrew Dickson in The Guardian, talks about the early negative publicity that surrounded plans for his 'Angel of the North' and how it very nearly didn't happen.
Personally, I've always thought it was a masterpiece, from the earliest days when I photographed it being fabricated in Hartlepool. I particularly recall seeing the sculpture lying on it's back with people working alongside. It looked like a scene from Lilliput!
The iconic emblem of the region (and Gateshead in particular) is now well-loved and seen by 1000's everyday who pass by it on the A1. The Guardian article ends with Gormley himself saying that whenever he himself passes by, he looks across and thinks: “That’s nice, I did that!”
