Bruges B - Minnewater 01

The Minnewater is an elongated lake in the centre of Bruges. It is surrounded by parts of the medieval fortress Begijnenvest, on whose part runs the street of the same name, and the Minnewater Park, which was built between 1977 and 1979. North of the lake is a road of the same name.

The Minnewater was probably built in the 13th century as a reservoir and buffer basin, when the locks regulating the city's water supply were built near the current lock house. The different water levels of the rice risk that the low-lying parts of Bruges were flooded during the snowmelt or during heavy, persistent rains. This became a problem when Bruges expanded and the previously uninhabited areas such as the seas were settled.

Until 1784, Minnewater was the berth of the Ghent barge until it then anchored at Katelijnepoort, then the city gate.
