1929 John Bean Orchard Sprayer

1929 John Bean Orchard Sprayer

built in San Jose, CA

The John Bean Co. shipped this sprayer to Weeks Hardware in Sebastopol in 1929 and they sold it to a local farmer. In the 1940s, John W. Elmore bought it from this farmer and used it to spray a mixture of sulfur and lime on his 15 acres of apple trees at Laguna Road, Sebastopol. After the sprayer was no longer in use it was stored there by son, John, until 2003 when be gave it to Scott Wilson for restoration and display.

It originally had a 6 HP John Bean Engine driving the pump but in the 60s it was replaced by a 5 HP Briggs and Stratton by son, Bob. Now the engine is 3 HP made by NOVO, a popular engine supplier used by Bean on many of their sprayers. The Sprayer wagon was pulled by a team of two horses. The redwood tank holds 200 gallons. The tank agitator has two 14 inch diameter propellers turning at 100 rpm.
