Broad Slack

I mentioned a couple of days ago that a Handley Page Halifax, LL505 had crashed into the summit of Great Carrs. The wreckage was 'cleared up' at the time by tipping most of it over this edge into 'Broad Slack'. The other side of Swirl How saw it's own tragedy on the 20th March 1944 when an Avro anson Mk I EG686, again on a night navigation exercise hit Swirl How. All three crew were killed:-

Sgt K.M Snelling, Pilot

Sgt K.J. Brettell, Pilot

Sgt W. Younger, Wireless Operator/Air Gunner

R.I.P
