SCAX 800 • Orange CA • 07/17/15

Metrolink train 688 has completed its stop at the Orange station and is continuing its journey south from Los Angeles to Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo. Power for the train is F40PH 800, the carrier's only F40PH (originally Amtrak 396). At one time, Metrolink purchased several F40PHs and SD60s, with the idea of combining the parts the create new passenger power. That idea didn't pan out, and one of the F40PHs was placed in service because it was in good condition. Engine 800 is so reliable, in fact, that crews affectionately call it the "tow truck" because it is used so often to rescue trains when their F59PH, F50PHI or MP36PH-3C engines develop problems!
