The Minotaur

Auguste Rodin, 1885–86, plaster.

“Conceived before 1886 and originally titled Satyr and Nymph or Nymph and Faun, this group explores a subject that was extremely popular during the 19th century. Named The Minotaur, after the Cretan monster, for the first time in 1889, it was inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses, of which Rodin was a passionate admirer.”
