Artkulu tomb in Hasankeyf (revisited)
We needed to return to the fabulous site of Hasankeyf (which we visited already in August 2006) because ut is under continued threat from the Turkish government which wants to build a massive dam (Ilisu Dam) and flood the site. Fortunately, the government does not always have its own way and the project was blocked by a court order earlier this year. The project was started in the 1980's, using money to be borrowed from Europe, but taht was stopped. There are now rumours that Chinese money might be used...
Anyway, it was good to be back even though it was as hot as it was 7 years before, namely 40 degrees. A large part of teh site has been closed off and the experience was not as wonderful as we had remembered it, which was a pity.
