Funduq

Granada, Spain. This is detail from the ceiling of the gateway of the Funduq al-Jadida (original Arabic name) or as it is now called Corral del Carbon (Coal House). It is in the city centre and not in the Alhambra. Dating from the 14th century, it served as a caravanseria or funduq (travellers lodge) during Muslim times. Travellers, especially merchants, would stay here and strike their deals. It is the only such structure left in Spain. Later, during the Christian Reconquista, it became a theatre and afterwards a dump (for coal). Material: stucco.
