Sri Lankan female leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya)
Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya)
The Sri Lankan leopard is a subspecies with its own genetic distinctions, whose adaptability, alpha predator status, and opportunistic hunting methods make it highly successful at surviving in the wild. The numbers of leopards in Sri Lanka would be larger, however, if it were not for human intervention which has rendered the Sri Lankan leopard an endangered species. This is mostly due to loss of habitat, poaching, and hunting.
