Benchmark Marconi

October 22, 2016

A United States Dept. of the Interior, National Park Service benchmark at Marconi Station site. It looks like its center is filed out. I wonder why??

This is located just outside of the overlook at Marconi Beach. The beach is named for Guglielmo Marconi. His station on this site, in 1903 transmitted the first transatlantic wireless message. It was sent from here to Cornwall, UK.

The station itself is long gone, succumbing to the forces of nature. In 2014, a monument commemorating the event was dismantled, and important pieces moved inland before what remained of it was sucked under by the ever encroaching Atlantic.
