Bigger Than the Average Locomotive
The Canadian Pacific T1c "Selkirk" steam locomotive number 5931 sits beside 14 Street SW, at Heritage Park, Calgary.
This is one of two remaining Selkirk engines out of the 36 originally built in Montreal; the other (5935) is preserved in Delson, Quebec. Built in 1949, this engine was used until 1959.
The T1 locomotives were designed to operate freight and passenger services throughout Western Canada and across the Rockies. Fully-loaded these engines weighed 340 tons, and were the biggest and most powerful locomotives in the British Empire.
