It is about time

Assateague Island National Seashore is a (long) day trip from Philadelphia and yet, for some reason, we never went. That changed when friends from outside the States visited and wanted to see "wild horses". In our part of the country, Assateague is really the only option.

In the summer the horses can be found on the beach, even in the ocean, trying to avoid the bugs from the marsh. That makes for great photo opportunities, but I figure that if the horses are suffering from bug bites, so would the photographer.

We went in November and had uncharacteristically warm weather without any pesky bugs! While not a "horse in the surf", we did see them in the dunes.

Strictly speaking, the horses are "feral", not "wild", and the herd is actively managed to maintain its health. Nevertheless, they are "wild enough" and I would encourage anyone who can visit Assateague to do so without waiting umpteen years for an excuse to actually do it.
