Church of St Germanus - the Edward Eliot memorial
This monument to Edward Eliot MP (d. 1722) is by John Michael Rysbrack, who is regarded as one of the three leading sculptors in England in the 18th century. It is regarded as one of the treasures of the Grade I-listed Church of St Germanus at St Germans in the east of Cornwall, and shows Eliot in Roman costume being mourned by a maiden. Originally installed in the chapel, it was subsequently moved to its present position in the north-west corner of the church, which was formerly a priory.
The old priory was acquired by the Eliot family after the Dissolution in the 1530s, and the church is within the grounds of Port Eliot House, the ancestral home of the Eliot family. Parts of this date back to the 12th century.
