garden spider
The heavy zig-zag webbing is called the stabilimentum and is of unknown purpose. Various theories are that it camouflages the spider, attracts prey, or warns away birds that may otherwise fly through the web. Every evening the spider eats the central part of the web and rebuilds it the following morning.
