Paul Richmond Ramsdell, U.S. Civil War Veteran
According to records obtained from the National Archives and Records Administration ("National Archives"), the exact date of P R Ramsdell's death is unknown. Did he die in Richmond VA on 17 August 1864 as one document shows or did he die on 10 May of that year as shown in another document? His grave marker indicates that he died in Andersonville Prison in Georgia but a document in his military service file indicates that he had been admitted to #21 General Hospital in Richmond and died there.
Richmond, as he was reportedly best known, served first with the 27th Maine Infantry and when discharged, enlisted in the 1st Maine Cavalry. He was part of the contingent of 1st Maine Cavalrymen who reported to General Kilpatrick for a raid on Richmond, VA. This was an ill fated attack commonly known as Dahlgren's Raid. One historian called it a "hare-brained scheme" for it was an utter failure, costing many men from the 1st Maine Cavalry their lives, eventually also the life of Richmond, since he was captured during the raid.
