Alligator (winch)

Alligator: a steam-powered warping tug, used to tow log booms down a lake. The 20 HP engine couldn't actually tow the log booms, so they steamed ahead (using the paddle-wheels), dropped anchor, let out the line and went back to the logs. Then they unhooked the paddle wheels, hooked up the winch, and hauled the boat and logs up to the anchor. (Or vice versa, anchoring and winching the logs up to the boat.) Repeat several times, because the lake is much longer than the winching cable. They were also amphibious, using the winch to haul the boat over land.

There's an article about them here, and Tom Thompson painted one.
