St. Agatha's Tower (Red Tower) - Malta
9-5-2022 - St. Agatha's Tower - more commonly known as the Red Tower, due to the colour it is painted.
Built in 1649, the outer walls are approximately 4 meters thick. It was manned by 30 men and stored enough ammunition and supplies to withstand a 40 day siege. It continued to have a military function throughout the British period, and was manned during both World Wars. From the British period it continued its military function being used as a radar station by the Armed Forces of Malta.
By the end of the 20th Century the Tower was falling into disrepair, with one turret completely missing. In 1999 restoration work was carried out by Din l-Art Helwa and completed in 2001.
The tower is open to the public for viewing and tours.
