The Jade Buddha Temple is the most famous in Shanghai and a wonderful introduction to Chinese culture as the start of our exploration of the city.
The temple was originally founded in 1882 to house two jade Buddhas brought from Burma, but the complex was rebuilt on a new site in 1918 after a fire damaged the original structure.
The sequence of halls and courtyards is an impressive spectacle, with a riot of colour and ornament to catch the eye. It is also clearly well used and loved by the local people, who happily far outnumbered the tourists..
