'Europa', Sculpture In Front of European Parliament Building, Brussels, Belgium
This bronze statue is the subject of a long-running misunderstanding. It stands in front of the European Parliament building in Brussels, and because it carries a Euro sign in her hand many people think that it represent the common European currency. In fact, its creation had nothing to do with the euro. The work was created in 1993 by Belgian artist May Claerhout before the Euro was even invented. The sculpture represents rather Europe itself, rising over a mass of individual people below her representing nation states. According to the artist, the 'e' was just meant to stand as an initial for Europe expressed in the Greek alphabet letter epsilon. It is undeniable, however, that May Claerhout was prophetic in her vision, years before the Euro was adopted. The sculpture was unveiled in its present spot in 1993. The Euro came into currency in 2002. Claerhout died in 2016.
