New Haven Railroad R-1-b class ALCO Mountain 4-8-2 steam locomotive 33XX with its Vanderbilt tender is seen leading a manifest freight train westbound at Stony Creek,Branford, Connecticut, ca 1941. These R-1 steam locomotives were originally built as Light Mountain of USRA design. Various modifications, refurbishments and rebuilds were conducted over the years on these steam locomotives with the addition of new appliances and improvement being included. The Vanderbilt tender was an addition which improved the water supply but did not really do anything for coal capacity improvement.
