Summerhaven General Store - Mt. Lemmon

I went hiking and camping around Mt. Lemmon in the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson. One of the attractions near Mount Lemmon is the little town of Summerhaven.

"Life is sweet in Summerhaven, slowly recovering from two devastating fires: the Bullock Fire, which consumed more than 32,000 acres around the village in the summer of 2002, and the Aspen Fire, which came a year later to devour more than 300 homes, cabins and shops.

Several businesses have been rebuilt, others are planned and big, expensive homes in various stages of construction dot the hills. Parking lots, something that had been lacking before the fires, are being built. Removal of dead trees and building rubble continues, seedlings have been planted and the vegetation is slowly coming back.

"We've rebounded," said Vic Zimmerman, owner of Mt. Lemmon Cookie Cabin, a pizza and cookie restaurant that reopened about a year ago. "It's a fun place to visit again."

It's also cool, really cool. Daytime temperatures in Summerhaven typically are 35 degrees below those in Phoenix. On a recent afternoon, after a 45-minute downpour that had patrons dashing into Zimmerman's and begging for hot chocolate, the mercury registered 61 - 50 degrees lower than in Phoenix at that hour."
