Ceylon frogmouth
Batrachostomus moniliger
The Sri Lanka frogmouth, or Ceylon frogmouth is a small frogmouth found in the Western Ghats of south India and Sri Lanka. Related to the nightjars, it is nocturnal and is found in forest habitats.
The plumage coloration resembles that of dried leaves and the bird roosts quietly on branches, making it difficult to see. Each has a favorite roost that it regularly returns to. It has a distinctive call that is usually heard at dawn and dusk. The sexes differ slightly in plumage.
This was a difficult handheld shot to take on a dark, rainy day. It didn't help that the frogmouth was sitting in the middle of the foliage either, although it presented a perfect immovable target that allowed me up close. Really close. Close enough that for the first time in my bird photography life, I actually had too big a lens to take a clear shot and had to zoom out! Taken wide open in aperture mode, this translated into a 1/15 shutter speed at 390 mm at ISO 800, which is testimony to the fabulous job Nikon has done with its VR technology in putting this lens together.
