Elephant Mosaics - 1993 - off Cheltenham High Street -301224 (2)
A series of mosaics on a wall just off the High Street in Cheltenham Gloucestershire.
Below is a funny story about how & why.
In March 1934 Chapman's Great London Z00/Circus came to Cheltenham. This was a real highlight with many acts & of course animals that would not be allowed to tour today – elephants, kangaroos, polar bears, lions, tigers, black bears to name nut a few.
To advertise the circus a parade went through the centre of Cheltenham but alas some of the elephants broke free & went in search of food. They headed to a seed merchant & pet shops called Bloodworth’s (still exists today 2025) to enjoy the food on offer. One elephant even got stuck in the doorway. There was little damage to the shop & it must have been such a funny sight to see.
Live elephants now banned from entrance of course.
