5164 was chosen by the 5164 Fund as the best of the 10 large prairies at Barry, and purchased at a cost of £2,250. The locomotive was officially the 30th to leave Barry, arriving on the SVR on 6 January 1973 in the company of GWR 4930 Hagley Hall and GWR 7819 Hinton Manor.
Restoration was completed in October 1979. It ran in service until July 1984. After a lengthy period out of use it received its second boiler ticket in 2004 running until 2014.
