The Backlit Yellow Calla Plant
I enjoy working with flowers as models. They're extremely patient, they can hold a pose for hours, and they work cheap. This plant was five dollars at Home Depot, and we can plant it in the garden when I've finished exploiting it.
Strobist info: I'm a big fan of backlighting, and a huge advantage of providing your own lighting is that you can use any form of lighting you can think of, and at any time of day. For the backlighting I put a YN560-II in a 24 inch softbox behind the plant, camera left at 11 o'clock, and a YN560 in an identical softbox behind the plant, camera right at 2 o'clock. For fill light, I then held a small mirror in front of the plant, camera left at 7 o'clock to bounce some light onto the front of the plant. Both strobes in manual mode, at 1/4 power, were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
Other plants, flowers, fruit or thingys that I've photographed using strobes, can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. In the description for that set, I list resources that I've used to learn how to light with off camera flash. www.flickr.com/photos/9422
Other Callas that I've exploited are in my Calla Lilly set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157626082181550/
