William H. Heiss was born circa 1837 in Pennsylvania, the son of William Heiss. It appears that initially William worked as a photographer in Philadelphia in 1863, and was located 1028 Chestnut Street in 1864. Around 1864, he also began his career as a traveling photographer, listing Jonestown, PA, as his home base when paying for a Class B license. He was also listed at New Holland, Lancaster County, Strasburg, and Heidelberg. One of his versos stated the following: W.H. Heiss at his Mammoth Star Photographic and Ambrotype Car, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. In 1870, William was listed as living in Tremont, PA, with his wife Amanda (born circa 1844) and two sons--Howard and William. He was listed in Philadelphia directories as a photographer through 1880. William Heiss passed away on 23 January 1880.
