Recycle and reuse!
The bird feeders I had always let the food get wet, so I recycled an old water fountain belonging to Max, and fashioned a way to hold a tray of food inside. It took the robin about half a day to work it out, and the tits about two days. But it works, the small birds can eat their fill of the now-dry food, and the larger birds ignore it... maybe something to do with the glass butterfly ornament I have fastened on top... it wobbles in the breeze and stops them from landing on it.
