PLANT DEFENSES — Professor Fiona Goggin extracts nematodes from a hydroponic nursery. The round nodes to the right of Goggin's finger are galls, signs of root damage from root-knot nematodes. The soilborne pests are uses in research to improve the plant defense response in soybeans to infection from nematodes and other soilborne diseases.
