Edward S. Dodge House, Longfellow & Clark, 1878.
This is the first drawing that I've ever done for a client, so it was a bit of an experiment. I consider myself lucky to live in Cambridge and be surrounded by so many great examples of 19th century architecture, which fulfills my interest in old buildings. I hope there will be more of these to come, if not to help offset the cost of architecture school, at least for my own enjoyment.
The house is an excellent example of American Queen Anne style architecture, one of many in the neighborhood surrounding Brattle Street. The picturesque, asymmetrical massing, turned porch columns, turret, oriels, faux half timbering, and corbelled, pilastered chimney are all features common to the best examples of this type of building. The house has undergone significant changes, including a number of dormers and the projecting bay of leaded-glass windows above the porch.
The house was cataloged by the Historic American Buildings Survey.
