Springtail species (Tomoceridae), Miltonrigg Wood, 2 September 17 (2 of 2)

Springtail species from the Tomoceridae family found in Miltonrigg Wood, 2 September 17.

Although these two shots might appear to be of different specimens (compare the colours of the second antennal segments!) I'm as sure as I can be that they're of the same individual!

It was considerably larger than the Orchesella cinctas found in Finglandrigg Wood recently, and although I didn't take any measurements, it could well have been 6mm in length, implying Pogonognathellus longicornis - the longest of the UK springtails. Its antennae are longer than its body, which is also consistent with this species.

There are currently only two Cumbrian records for Pogonognathellus longicornis shown on NBN Atlas, neither of which was submitted via Tullie House/CBDC.
