Orchesella cincta, Finglandrigg Wood Nature Reserve, 29 August 17
Record shot of an Orchesella cincta springtail in the Finglandrigg Wood Nature Reserve, 29 August 17.
One of two found on adjacent fenceposts in broadleaf woodland.
I think this was probably my biggest head-scratcher since finding the Thick-headed Fly in High Stand Plantation over a year ago! Not only could I not identify it, I didn't even know which Order of insect (or is it a non-insect hexapod?) it belonged to.
Many thanks to rockwolf for putting me out of my misery!
The NBN Atlas map currently only shows three Orchesella cincta records for Cumbria (which for some reason reduces to two at higher magnification!), none of which was submitted via Tullie House/CBDC. However, due to its small size and other factors, it's probably far more widespread than the records indicate.
