Luaia Nampui
The reason why it is called Rulchawm khua
Accompanied by two friends, came to this place for the first time on 19/08/2003 from Assam on the trail of our roots.Legend had it that it was the Biate clan who kept and fed "the great serpent". Lt.Col J.Shakespear( locally known asTarmita), the first Superintendent of Lushai Hills in his books "The Lushei Kuki Clans", published in 1912, also said so. We were naturally surprised and puzzled to learn that it was the Kawilams who kept the serpent. Who then were/are the
Kawilams ? Are they our lost kinsmen ? It sounded to us like a dance style as Kawilam in Mizo literally means to "dance in a zigzag manner".To ascertain this, we met Mr.Lalrumruta Sailo in his residence. This robust, tall and handsome octogenerian turned out to be a real Sailo Chief who ruled for 33 years(1921-1954) at Ruallung village and was compelled by circumstances(must be the regrouping of villages) to settle here in the aftermath of the famous "disturbance in Mizoram". We asked queries & listened to him for half an hour or so. As we went un-invited, we dared not ask for photo shoot. He was, however, very happy to receive us on learning that one of our companions was based at Tezpur where his daughter was teaching at Mount Carmel School. He also didn't have the answers to our jigsaw puzzle. Well, the quest for the answer to the mystery goes on and may never be solved.(Dr.(Mrs) N.Chatterjee, the erstwhile Sr.R.O.,T.R.I, Mizoram, who interviewed Shri Lalrumruta Sailo at Ruallung, introduced him in her book entitled " The Earlier Mizo Society" (published 1975) as the Chief of Lenchim.(chief-ship abolished in 1954)
Revisited on 25/04/08 on way to Champhai en route Rih Dil and the above image and those two below were framed on this occasion.
