The Khmeimim military airport in the Syrian coastal city of Latakia, which is under Russian control, prevented the landing of an Iranian plane belonging to Mahan Air after it had already entered Syrian airspace.

The Syrian news website “Sawt al-Asimah” quoted private sources as saying that the plane with the flight code “IRM174” returned to Tehran after circling the airspace of the Damascus countryside in the Al-Saba Bayar area -

The sources estimated that the plane was loaded with weapons for Hezbollah and Iranian militias in Syria, and noted that there are Israeli threats against the international airports of Damascus and Aleppo, similar to those received against Beirut airport, according to which no Iranian plane will land at those airports.

The sources noted that the planes carrying the Iranian delegations that visited Syria over the past week were coordinated and approved directly by Israel through intermediaries, in light of the negotiation topics conveyed through the advisor to the Iranian Supreme Leader and the Defense Minister who visited Damascus last week.

The sources noted that there is an agreement between the Russian side and the Israelis without prior notice, which states that civilian airports will not be bombed and will resume operations, provided that they are not used for weapons transfers to Hezbollah.

“Kol Habira” previously reported that the same plane that avoided landing at Khmeimim Airport landed at a military airport in central Syria, hours before the “Josiya” border crossing between Syria and Lebanon was bombed by Israel, which caused it to be taken out of service.

In early October, Latakia International Airport and the Russian Khmeimim military base were attacked by Israel, causing a fire and destroying a weapons and ammunition depot inside the airport, after the arrival of an Iranian plane.

Private sources reported to the “Syria TV” website that Israeli strikes targeted the Russian Khmeimim base in the countryside of Latakia province and other military sites on the Syrian coast, hours after the arrival of an Iranian plane belonging to the “Qasim Fars Air” company.

The sources added that the Israeli bombing did not target the runways and towers at the Khmeimim base and the Latakia civil airport.

It is worth noting that the Khmeimim base is considered part of the Latakia civil airport, as the base and the airport share common runways, while the defense of the airport is the responsibility of Russian forces.

It is very possible that the Russian refusal to land a plane carrying weapons destined for Hezbollah at their Khmeimim base was a direct order from Putin, following a previous Israeli gesture requested by the Russians.
