Eleanor Roosevelt Spoke To These Auditorium Chairs <<>> In Explore

Similar to the auditorium chairs in my school. We sat in them for assemblies, and musical or theatrical events.

We also used them for study halls in study periods. I did some of my homework there. They were very comfortable.

They are no longer being produced. I visited my school, about 25 years ago (while I attended a course at The Picatinny Arsenal, in New Jersey) They showed me how they were using spare chairs for parts, as chairs in the auditorium wore out and needed replacement parts.

These chairs, that I saw online, are similar to ours. However I don't see the fold-up desk arms we used in study periods. The rivets and all the hardware, and the bent plywood seats and back all look the same.

I guess it's New Deal style, not unique to my school... Building needed schools in Newark and all across the country was a source of craft and factory jobs for the suppliers of all kinds of things... I took photos of the murals in the lobby that were done by local artists, in the style of Diego Rivera. I will try to find them...

Eleanor Roosevelt, "The First Lady Of The World," came to speak to us, because the school was built as a back to work project for Newark. For many, it was literally (not just figuratively) a life saver. She went around as Franklin Delano Roosevelt's eyes and ears. She identified successes and problems in the programs that helped people survive the Great Depression. The Roosevelts are still very much alive in my memory!!!

I highly recommend the Ken Burns TV series on The Roosevelts.
