Bowdish's Traveling Photograph Gallery

Carte de visite by Robert Frederick Bowdish of Booneville, N.Y. A group of men and boys stand in front of the traveling photograph gallery of Robert Frederick Bowdish (1833-1908) of Booneville, N.Y.

Bowdish is likely the man standing with his hands in his pockets inside the doorway of the gallery. Samples of his work are in frames hanging from the sides of the wagon. On one side is painted AMBROTYPES.

Bowdish began his career by 1860. In the book "Adirondack Photographers" by Sally E. Svenson, Bowdish "photographed a number of sites around Blue Mountain and the Fulton Chain of Lakes from 1865, including early scenes of sportsmen and their guides. Heading west circa 1870, he took pictures in and near Columbus, Ohio, and later in Illinois." He returned to New York about 1884. Working alone and with partners, he specialized in outdoor photography.
