Papilio Demoleus Mating Lime Swallowtail Butterflies
The Lime Swallowtail Butterfly has a moderate to quick wingbeat and will hover atop flowers while sucking nectar at times they will even land on the flower! They are not afraid of humans and will let us get quite close if approached slowly!
This pair were flying and he was chasing her, and then suddenly they attempted to mate on a branch. But decided to try inside the bush in the shadows - photographed here.
The mating 'foreplay' lasted for only 20 seconds!! But the actual mating lasted for approximately 20 minutes!!!
