Anthesis is the stage when a flower becomes fully open and ready for pollination. In Banksia prionotes, this happens gradually from the bottom to the top of the flower spike. You can see a band of tiny, pale orange flowers opening upward over time. As they open, the styles stick out, giving the spike a fluffy, brush-like look.
