Harmen Oldendorf Passing Under the Bridge
As we were heading out yesterday, we saw the harbor pilot boat coming back in and knew one of the freighters anchored off Annapolis would soon be under way. So we shadowed the ship as she headed up to Baltimore harbor. Here she is passing under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. To give you some sense of scale, the ship is 738 feet (225 meters) long by 105 feet (32 meters) wide. The maximum height clearance under the bridge is 186 feet (57 meters). This ship is HUGE! We followed her up to the Baltimore light.
Baltimore is the third busiest port in the United States. There are always a number of freighters anchored off Annapolis. In order to dock at Baltimore, the ship must take on a harbor pilot before passing under the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, then traveling up the bay to pass under the Francis Scott Key Bridge and enter the harbor.
The shipping channel is the deepest part of the bay and is the river bed of the ancient Susquehanna River. The deepest part of the bay is 175 feet but the average depth is only 21 feet so there are lots of shallows and shoals which is why the harbor pilot is needed.
Do view large!!
I have a Marine Traffic app on my phone that lets me see which ships are where in the area and gives all the info about the ship.
