China Railways: Moving the Masses 7/11
Stand behind the yellow line ...
You wanna know about efficiency - China Railways (and Airlines) can teach one a lot.
The 1st high-speed line in China was built in 2007. A mere 6 years later, as of 2013, China had converted 11, 028 of its total 103,144 km (64,091 mi) of railways to HSR, now the longest HSR network in the world. In comparison, the US has an HSR network of only 734 km ...the plan is to expand the network to 270,000 km (170,000 mi) by 2050.
Rail traveling across this country these last 9 years I have been blessed with seeing all this at first hand: literally THOUSANDS of tunnels being moled through mile-high mountains, HUNDREDS of mile-long bridges being built across lakes and valleys right now - it really, really is bloody impressive stuff.
