Reflections at Vestrahorn, Iceland

Vestrahorn, also called Vesturhorn, is the name of an impressive mountain being 575 m high, about 15 km east of Höfn, Hornafjörður in south-east Iceland. At the eastern end of Vesturhorn the uniquely shaped mountain Brunnhorn rises up from the Atlantic Ocean, being 454 m high. Vesturhorn is, unlike most other mountains in Iceland being of volcanic origin, composed of unstratified plutonic rock, mostly gabbro but with some granophyre. Gabbro is a stone closely related to granite. The mountains are appr. 7-8 million years old. The whole site of Vesturhorn is spectacular. Beautiful black sand dunes with green grasses form a fabulous foreground for the steep and almost fairy-tale mountains. A farm on the site was abandoned in 1984.
