Details and History

The Library of Congress website offers a multitude of historical images, many with no known restrictions on use. This circa 1865 stereograph is titled Belle Boyd, Confederate spy. The photographer is likely Mathew B. Brady or his apprentice Levin C. Handy.

Belle is remembered more for her brazen deeds than the damage of her efforts, as noted in Karen Abbott's biographical column. Only seventeen in the first year of the war she had defied gender stereotype by educating a slave in violation of Confederate Law, killing a Union soldier, and using family connections to become a courier for the most important Confederate generals. She also sold liquor to the soldiers on the side. Perhaps the most celebrated exploit occurred at the battle of Front Royal during Jackson's valley campaign. After providing intelligence on Union movements, she ran across the battlefield - getting bullet holes in her skirt - to report the forces were small. Jackson's men easily defeated them. Her efforts earned the Southern Cross of Honor, the Confederate equivalent of the US Medal of Honor. She was arrested six times and imprisoned twice for secessionist activities but only received minor punishments. Belle survived the war to enjoy a life of celebrity until her death in 1900. She was known by several nicknames including Siren of the Shenandoah, Cleopatra of the Secession, Belle Rebelle and Pet of the Confederacy
