Verneuil-en-Bourbonnais

The medieval village of Verneuil-en-Bourbonnais is a commune in the Allier département of the Auvergne region of central France. In 2009 it had a population of only 242. Formerly a stronghold of the Dukes of Bourbon the village was once protected by ramparts and a castle constructed by the Bourbon Duke Louis II. In 1465 the village was taken by Louis XI, then King of France, who destroyed both the castle and much of the ramparts.
